Role Summary
A gourmet meat processing factory in the Northern Suburbs is looking for a Safety, Health and Environment Officer.
Responsibilities
- Developing, implementing and maintaining the Safety, Health and Environment Management system.
- Ensuring that the organization maintains compliance to the latest version of the SMETA Best Practice Guidance, OHS Act, NEMA, FSSC 22 000, IBL and customer requirements.
- Participating in SMETA Audits as a respondent and other audits as required and ensuring non-conformances related to SHE are resolved within timelines specified on the relevant portals.
- Identifying and championing continuous improvement projects that enhance the SHE performance of the company.
- Developing and delivering training on Safety, Health and Environment topics for employees at the prescribed frequency and as required.
- Working with contractors and service providers to maintain the contractor management processes in accordance with legal requirements and in conjunction with Maintenance.
- Scheduling medical surveillance for new and existing employees in liaison with the appointed medical services provider at the prescribed frequency.
- Sourcing appropriate PPE in line with identified hazards and risks.
- Coordinating and conducting regular SHE Committee meetings; planning, reviewing and implementing recommendations.
- Preparing SHE performance reports, statistics and presentations.
- Ensuring regular emergency response exercises and drills are reviewed and conducted to ensure the highest level of emergency preparedness.
- Overall responsibility for the Sustainability of the business.
- Meticulous document control and record-keeping.
- Managing the work and certification of First Aiders, Fire Fighters, OHS Reps and Forklift Drivers where applicable.
- Any other duties that may be assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Relevant degree/diploma in Occupational Health and Safety as well as Environmental Management/Science
- Relevant short courses in Safety, Health and Environment
- A minimum of 1-2 years post graduate experience in managing SHE; preferably in a food manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of South African SHE legislation including local by-laws
- Experience with management systems and online Sustainability portals (e.g., SHERPA and SEDEX) would be an added advantage
- Understanding of risk management, ISO 14001 and ISO45001
- Proficiency in MS Office, report writing and presentations skills
- Management and leadership skills
- Flexible and adaptable communicator with good time management skills
- Understanding of SMETA Audits
